ADVERTISE HERE

A radar speed sign is seen on the central median near Miri Public Park in the direction of the seahorse roundabout.

MIRI (Oct 25): The Public Works Department (JKR) has installed four solar-powered radar speed signs at accident-prone areas here to improve road safety.

The signs have been installed near the entrance to Borneo Medical Centre to alert vehicles travelling towards the airport; road near Miri Public Park to seahorse roundabout to alert vehicles travelling southbound; road opposite the Road Transport Department; and in front of JKR Divisional Miri Office to warn vehicles travelling towards Saberkas Flyover.

Miri Divisional engineer Stephen Ng said the signs will detect the speed of approaching vehicles, thereby increasing driver awareness and promoting safer driving habits.

“This real-time feedback helps drivers know if they need to slow down to comply with speed limits. These billboards are also able to record the number of speeding vehicles and send such statistics wirelessly to the operations centre.

“Moreover, as the billboard is solar-powered, it is able to operate sustainably without the need for an external power source,” he said.

Ng stressed the necessity of these signs, noting that speeding is a major cause of road accidents here, particularly where traffic flows quickly.

“More of these billboards will be installed in other high-risk areas. The data collected will help enhance road safety efforts even further,” he added.
