MIRI (Oct 14): Miri Hindu Society (MHS) recently concluded its nine-day celebration of ‘Navarathiri Alangara Maha Utchava Thiruvila’.

The Navaratri celebration, which entered its eighth year this year, took place at Sri Kamini Durga Eswari Amman temple here, running from Oct 3 to 12.

According to MHS chairman Murugayah Veloo, the Navaratri celebration lasted for nine days and nights, during which the first three days were dedicated to Goddess Durga, the next three to Lakhsmi, and the last three to Saraswati.

Various nine forms of the goddess were worshipped throughout the nine-day celebration, alongside recitals and chanting, to celebrate her various incarnations and victories over evil.

‘Vijayadashami’, the 10th day of the celebration, which fell on Oct 12, marked the victory of Goddess Durga and the end of the Navaratri celebration.

Murugayah expressed his gratitude to the Sarawak government through the Unit for Other Religion (Unifor) for their continuous support towards the temple.

“Every year, we can see various developments taking place in the temple and all of these are made possible with support from the state government,” he said in his speech for the event’s celebration here last Friday.

He also extended his appreciation to the Miri Hindu Society members and the public for their support and contributions throughout the celebration.

The event was also attended by Miri MP Service Centre political officer Raymond Tegang, who represented Miri MP Chiew Choon Man; Miri Indian Association chairman Councillor Karambir Singh; and Miri Hwa Kwang Buddhist Association secretary Jessy Voon.
