SIBU (July 30): The district police aim to run more crime prevention activities with the local community in the second half of this year, said ACP Zulkipli Suhaili.

The Sibu police chief said such programmes would be held in hotspot areas to increase the community’s confidence in the police.

“There are several crime prevention plans that have been outlined such as ‘Customer Day’, ‘Stop and Talk’, ‘Meet and Greet’, and ‘Talk to Us’.

“I call on the district Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division to improve on its planning for these programmes so as to strengthen the bond between the police and the public,” he said at the monthly police parade here today.

He also reminded his men to always display good conduct to maintain the image of the police force among the public.

On the crime index in Sibu, Zulkipli said despite an increase in some categories of crime, the overall situation remained under control.

He said a total of 357 cases were reported between January and June this year, an increase of 152 cases from the same period in 2023.

“Of the total cases reported in the first six months this year, 314 or 87.96 per cent have been solved,” he said.

He also noted an increase in commercial crime losses in the district from January to June this year, at RM10.23 million compared to RM6.66 million over the same period last year.

On drugs, he said police have made 687 arrests in the first six months of this year and seized RM722,297 worth of illicit narcotics.
