Motorcyclist fined RM5k for doing a ‘wheelie’

SIBU: A 30-year-old motorcyclist was sentenced to one day’s jail and fined RM5,000 in default, one week’s imprisonment by the Magisrates’ Court here today (July 11), for riding recklessly while endangering himself and road users.

Magistrate Romario Jonoi who convicted Amiruddin from Taman Soon Hup, Jalan Permai, on his own plea of guilty to the charge, also disqualified him from holding driving license for five years.

According to the fact of case, on July 5 at about 9 pm, a traffic operation to wit “Ops Samseng Jalanan” was conducted and led by Inspector Muhammad Edham.

The charge against the accused stated that he rode a motorcycle on the road recklessly, causing danger to himself and the road users at Jalan Awang Ramli Amit on July 5 at about 11.30 pm.

Around 11.30 pm, the accused was observed to ride the motorcycle recklessly and made a dangerous attempt to perform a ‘wheelie’ (to rise the front tyre of his motorcycle) at Jalan Awang Ramli Amit.

The accused was immediately arrested at around 11.34 pm in front of Simpang Tiga roundabout.  A police report was subsequently made by Inspector Muhammad.

Thereby, he had committed an offence under Section 42 (1) of Road Transport Act 1987 which provides for a jail term of up to five years and fine of not less than RM5,000 and not more than RM15,000 upon conviction.

In addition, the offender will be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving license for a period of not less than five years from the date of conviction.

The accused who has no legal representation, opted to pay the fine.
