MIRI: The local Member of Parliament (MP) Chiew Choon Man has expressed apprehension regarding the persisting issues troubling Malaysia Airlines. He has urged for prompt and resolute actions to tackle a series of operational setbacks, encompassing flight delays, turnbacks, technical glitches, and widespread flight cancellations.
In a statement released today, Chiew underscored the immediate necessity for Malaysia Airlines’ management to prioritize top-notch safety, reliability, and customer service standards.
“It is paramount that these issues are promptly resolved to retain the trust and confidence of both our citizens and the global community,” he emphasized.
Chiew also illuminated the repercussions of these disruptions on passengers, highlighting that the recent decrease in flight numbers has resulted in a significant surge in ticket prices, not only for Malaysia Airlines but throughout the market.
“The decrease in supply has led to an escalation in ticket costs, causing considerable inconvenience and financial burden for travellers, particularly those heavily reliant on air travel,” he further remarked.
Furthermore, the MP disclosed his intention to bring up these concerns during the forthcoming budget session in Parliament.
He is planning to propose the implementation of a special airfare discount for Sarawakians who require air travel to other parts of Malaysia.
Drawing inspiration from the discounted rates offered to residents of Jeju Island in South Korea, Chiew suggested that this move could enhance national unity by making air travel more accessible and affordable for all Malaysians.
“It is crucial that we take these measures to ensure that Malaysia Airlines not only overcomes these hurdles but also cements its standing as a source of national pride and a vital facilitator of connectivity across our diverse and geographically dispersed nation,” Chiew concluded.
The persisting operational hurdles at Malaysia Airlines have prompted doubts about the carrier’s ability to uphold its reputation as the nation’s premier airline.
