KAPIT (Aug 3): The Divisional Schools Sports Council (MSSB) of Kapit was commended for the successful hosting of the 45thh Annual Athletics Championships here, on Friday.
Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, who is Hulu Rajang MP, officiated the closing ceremony and presented the prizes at Padang Sukan Kapit.
Accompanying him were Song District Education officer Etam Linggi and SMK Selirik principal Awin Engga, who was the championships’ organising committee chairman.
“I must say that I am quite overwhelmed by the cheering crowds, all with high spirits in supporting their favourite athletes.
“For the district, the MSSB annual championships remain the biggest meet for track and field athletes here every year. Fifty of those who have shown the best performances would be selected to represent Kapit in the state-level MSS (School Sports Council) grand event, to be taking place in Sri Aman from Sept 1 to 6.
“To these selected young athletes, I call upon you to train seriously under the guidance of your coaches, so that you would be in tiptop condition in the state-level meet.
“I would like to see some of you represent Sarawak at the national event,” said Ugak, who later announced allocations of RM20,000 for MSSB Kapit and another RM10,000 for Kapit District Education Office, meant to prepare the 50 young athletes from here for the state-level championships.
Hosted by SMK Selirik this year, the MSSB Kapit athletics championships recorded participation by some 700 athletes from primary and secondary schools in Kapit, Bukit Mabong and Song districts.
