KUCHING (Aug 10): MyCar, a Malaysian homegrown e-hailing platform, is planning a return to the Sarawak market after having operated in the state from 2017 to 2020, says Michael Kong.

According to the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) Sarawak chairman, it is anticipated that MyCar’s contribution would boost the public transportation industry in the state given its experience and renewed commitment.

“MyCar currently commands a 15 per cent market share of e-hailing rides in Malaysia.

“Its re-entry will introduce a fourth e-hailing operator into the Sarawak market, marking a significant step forward for the industry.

“As we continue to promote public transportation, e-hailing will play a pivotal role in ensuring our transportation network is comprehensive and accessible to all,” he said in a statement, issued following a meeting between LPKP Sarawak and MyCar representatives here yesterday.

Kong said during the meeting, they had discussed LPKP Sarawak’s policies for commercial vehicles.

According to him, it is crucial to keep e-hailing operators informed of these policies and in this regard, it is LPKP Sarawak’s expectation to ensure that all e-hailing services are in full compliance with these policies and that operators provide a safe, reliable and pleasant ride experience for passengers.

“E-hailing operators are a critical component of the public transportation industry.

“Their services, alongside bus operators and the upcoming autonomous rapid transit (ART) system, are essential in creating a robust and comprehensive public transportation network in Kuching.

“Their flexibility, convenience and accessibility complement other modes of transport, providing residents with seamless connectivity across the city,” he said.

Kong also pointed out the increase in e-hailing operators will enhance connectivity and foster healthy competition, ultimately benefiting the people of Sarawak.

A vibrant, competitive market ensures services remain high-quality, affordable and responsive to the needs of the community, he said.

“We look forward to working with all stakeholders to achieve this vision,” he added, pledging that LPKP Sarawak is committed to nurturing a dynamic and inclusive public transportation system.
