SIBU (Aug 4): The ‘Children’s Advocacy Programme on Children’s Love’ programme is a platform to share about the protection and rights of children.
According to Women, Family and Community Development Minister Dato Sri Nancy Shukri, children should know and be aware of their rights.
“Working with the police and related parties, especially those who carry out law enforcement, is part of our effort to protect the children.
“We want to give children the opportunity to know what to do when something happens to them or someone they know,” she said when officiating at the programme held at SMK Agama here yesterday.
The Santubong MP said the aim of the programme is to increase children’s understanding of situations that require care and protection.
She said it also gives exposure to them about actions that could be taken by parents, guardians and the children themselves when involved in such situations.
“The Child Protection Team (PPKK) should be given an opportunity to get to know the children in their respective areas better so they can play their roles and responsibilities as outlined in their guidelines,” she added.
Adding on, Nancy said the community should also know what to do if they know of any children experiencing abuse or neglect.
“If you see something suspicious, do not just record videos for social media but report it to the nearest police station, or call Talian Kasih 15999,” she said.
Nancy said her ministry is putting strong emphasis on improving the safety of all children in terms of both their mental and physical aspects.
“It is our great hope that together we can find the right solution to overcome social problems related to the children, as well as maintain their safety and protection in order to curb child abuse and neglect in the future.”
Among those present at the programme were Sibu Division Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman and Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili.
