New DUN seats no change to GPS service commitment, says Hamzah

KUCHING: The proposed creation of 17 new State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats, including Samarindah, will not alter Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) commitment to providing the best services to Sarawakians.

Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Brahim said GPS has always maintained a positive outlook and would not discriminate between areas in providing services, including newly created constituencies.

“Therefore, GPS, led and spearheaded by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, will continue to provide the best services to everyone, as long as they are Sarawakians, regardless of their constituency.

“I see the creation of new DUN seats, including Samarindah, as a positive development. I also believe and am confident that the Election Commission (EC) has its own methods and approach in establishing these constituencies,” he told reporters after officiating the Program Bomba Komuniti DUN N.17 Stakan at Dewan Perpaduan Stakan, Taman Samarindah here today (Sept 12).

Previously, the EC began a public display on the proposed addition of 17 new DUN seats in Sarawak on Sept 1.

Among the new seats proposed by the EC are N.02 Jagoi, N.06 Pasir Pandak, N.09 Matang, N.10 Semarak, N.16 Tabuan Jaya, N.19 Maong, N.23 Samarindah and N.26 Sungai Serin.

Also proposed are N.53 Igan, N.61 Tanah Mas, N.64 Sungai Merah, N.66 Bukit Kemuyang, N.75 Melekun, N.84 Batu Niah, N.89 Permaisuri, N.90 Tudan and N.93 Usun Apau.

Hamzah added that through the public display, the EC is providing residents with the opportunity to submit their views and objections regarding the proposal.

“However, we believe the EC will study and consider the matter for the benefit of all residents and the areas involved,” he stressed.

Stakan is one of the constituencies under the Kota Samarahan parliamentary constituency, alongside Muara Tuang and Asajaya.
