New Kota Samarahan Sixth Form College to begin operations in 2028

KOTA SAMARAHAN, Sept 26: The new Kota Samarahan Sixth Form College, currently under construction, is expected to begin operations in 2028 as part of efforts to strengthen pre-university education facilities in the Samarahan Division.

Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development and Kota Samarahan MP Datuk Rubiah Wang said construction of the college was progressing according to schedule, with the project expected to be completed within 24 months.

She said the college, located next to SMK Kota Samarahan and the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG), would provide a more conducive learning environment for Sixth Form students.

“Alhamdulillah, Samarahan has been approved for a Sixth Form College, which we have been fighting for since 2014.

“The approval was obtained in 2022, and construction began this year, with an implementation period of 24 months,” she said as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).

She said this when met by reporters after the closing ceremony of Nyambung Blaja 2026 @ Unimas for the Samarahan Division today.

Rubiah said once completed, the college would accommodate Sixth Form students from across the Samarahan Division, including Sebuyau, Asajaya and Kota Samarahan, effectively centralising Sixth Form education at a single location.

She said the move would also help ease congestion at secondary schools in the Kota Samarahan area, which are experiencing growing student enrolment.

“The college will offer both Science and Arts streams, while facilities such as laboratories will provide students with a more suitable learning environment for pre-university studies,” she said.

Rubiah added that Science stream students currently based at SMK Muara Tuang, including those from Asajaya, would eventually be transferred to the new college.

The establishment of the college is expected to provide a dedicated hub for Sixth Form education in Samarahan while supporting the growing demand for secondary and pre-university education in the rapidly developing area. — DayakDaily
