KUCHING: The Ministry of Education’s decision to permit pupils to wear school uniforms for only two days a week for the 2024/2025 school session has received positive reactions from school organisations.

Beginning this March students can wear school uniforms for two days followed by sports clothes for two days and use co-curricular clothes for one day.

“We consider this situation to be a win-win situation because we can ease the burden on parents ahead of the opening of the 2024-2025 school session,” said Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS), Zulkiflee Sebli.

“Parents must be very grateful even if there is a request to wear sportswear during the school week and KGBS hopes the ministry will issue new guidelines for this dress code so that school members and parents are more prepared,” he said on Sunday (Jan 21).

KGBS being aware that all schools have a co-curricular day every week, usually on Wednesday, asked whether the co-curricular uniform of the uniformed unit on Wednesday is considered a uniform.

“KGBS also hopes the Ministry will continue to provide uniforms for uniformed units in addition to expanding its provision to all Primary 2 students,” he said.

Besides that, Zulkiflee hoped the teachers are also given the same flexibility as students so that the school members look neater by dressing the same in one day.

“We are sure that the autonomy given to schools will make it easier for school management to draw up their own guidelines,” he added.

Meanwhile Kuching Chung Hua Middle School (CHMS) No 1, 3, and 4 Board of Management Committee chairman Datuk Richard Wee said the step taken by the Ministry is a more liberal approach.
