New Sebuyau Water Treatment Plant reaches 79pct, set to ease Batu Kitang reliance

SEBUYAU, Sept 24: Sebuyau’s water supply is set for a boost as its new 5 million litres per day (5 MLD) treatment plant using acute system technology reaches 79 per cent completion, helping ease the burden on and reduce dependence on the Batu Kitang Water Treatment Plant in Kuching.

Sarawak Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said the nearly RM15 million plant was being developed using funding from the Sarawak government.

“The plant is important to support the supply of treated and clean water to Sebuyau and surrounding areas in the Samarahan Division, which currently receive treated and clean water from the Batu Kitang Water Treatment Plant in Kuching, with a capacity of 868 MLD, as well as from the smaller Sungai Ular Sebuyau plant, which has a capacity of 3.2 MLD,” he said in a statement shared on his social media yesterday (Sept 23).

Julaihi, who is also Sebuyau assemblyman, said the plant would source its raw water from Sungai Ular Sebuyau, which originates from Sebuyau National Park.

Meanwhile, a similar 5 MLD water treatment plant using the same system at Ensika, Ulu Sungai Sebangan, was recently completed.

He said both new plants in Sebuyau and Ensika, Ulu Sebangan, would play an important role in strengthening water supply not only for Sebuyau but also for Sadong Jaya, Simunjan and Asajaya. — DayakDaily
