KUCHING (Sept 14): The residents of Kampung Quop, at Mile 10 here, have been struggling to continue their daily lives since the bridge connecting the village to Batu 14 collapsed on Sept 26 last year.
According to Kampung Quop chief Bonita Andrew, the incident occurred when a lorry from a transportation company, carrying soil, plunged into the river, causing the structure to collapse.
“This damage not only endangers the road users, but also causes significant hardship to the people of Kampung Quop, who rely heavily on the bridge to attend to their daily needs.
“Affected by the damage, the villagers have to find alternative routes, which are much longer.
“The situation has added further strain on those struggling to carry out their daily routines, such as purchasing essentials and sending their children to school,” she said in a statement.
Bonita said upon hearing about the bridge collapse, she immediately lodged a police report on the day of the incident.
Copies of the report had also been submitted to the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) that same day.
“However, there has been no response or resolution from either agency till today,” she said.
The Ketua Kaum (KK) and the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) had also sent a letter to the MPP on May 8 this year, said Bonita, adding that on June 20, the MPP responded: “The insurance adjuster from the lorry company’s side is currently in the process of arranging the report to file the insurance claim.”
The situation worsened when the nearby bridge at Lorong 1 of Jalan Kimura, was also affected by erosion, raising concerns that it could collapse at any moment, said Bonita.
“The entire Kampung Quop community is hoping that the authorities would take immediate action to repair the bridge so that residents could resume their daily routines without issues.
“It is hoped that this issue would receive the attention from and swift action by the local authorities.
“The immediate restoration of the bridge is crucial towards ensuring the safety and smooth movement of Kampung Quop residents, and to prevent any unwanted incidents in the future,” added Bonita.
