No compromise for those smuggling, misappropriating govt subsidies, says KPDN minister

MIRI (Aug 26): The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) will not compromise with any parties involved in smuggling or misappropriating government subsidies meant for the needy.

Its minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said this was because the ministry does not want any parties sabotaging government agendas by profitting from activites that are against the law.

“With regards to a statement issued by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) related to a case in Sibu on the seizure of smuggled subsidised diesel, this matter also falls under KPDN’s jurisdiction, which is the Supply Act 1961.

“I would like to point out here that KPDN will continue to enhance cooperation with relevant agencies, including MACC, the police and Marine police, in our efforts to eradicate smuggling or leakage of subsidised goods including diesel,” he told a press conference after meeting with local leaders here on the issue of petrol supply to foreign vehicles.

According to news reports on Sunday, MACC arrested five individuals, including two women, suspected to be involved in the embezzlement and misappropriation of subsidised diesel belonging to a fishermen’s association in Sibu.

MACC also seized 1.6 million litres of diesel and cash amounting to RM3.7 million.

“This is a major case as it involves a syndicate in Sarawak believed to have been operating since 2012. KPDN will cooperate with MACC in this case to ensure a thorough investigation and the case will proceed with prosecution in court,” he said.

Also present were KPDN secretary general Dato Sri Mohd Sayuthi Bakar, KPDN deputy secretary general (User Empowerment and Management) Dato Zakaria Shaaban, KPDN director general Datuk Azman Adam, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting, Miri MP Chiew Choon Man and Miri mayor Adam Yii.
