MIRI (July 6): Swift action by the occupants of a shophouse at the Waterfront area here has prevented further damage to the property after a room at the first floor of the premises caught fire Friday evening.

According to Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in a statement, an emergency call from one of the occupants was received at 7.16pm before a team of firefighters from Miri Central station were mobilised to the scene.

The fire broke out on the first floor of the shophouse in one of the rooms which were used to store cardboard egg trays, it added.

“The occupants managed to extinguish the fire with water before we arrived at the scene.

“Bomba personnel continued to douse the premises and conducted inspections to ensure that the fire would not reignite, before wrapping up the operation at 7.53pm,” said Bomba.
