Only fond memories remain

LUNDU: Friends and relatives of the three victims of the recent boat tragedy in Sungai Batang Kayan remember nothing but good things about them.

The three victims, 14-year-old Alsma Jithil, 16-year-old Helena Fasha Petrus and 15-year-old Vilkie Wilson were remembered as great human beings, obedient, funny and lively.

The great memories that were created together with the victims will be forever cherished until the end of the time.

The Sarawak Tribune met up with some of the relatives and friends on some of the great memories shared between them and the victims, their traits and others.

Ammir Mohd Herman, aged 15, who is the cousin of Vilkie said they always hang out with each other every day since they were children.

“We always go fishing near the river, and explore the forest and others.

“There are times where we talk about our future and schools.

“There are a lot of great memories, whether sweet or bitter memories, I will always cherish that till the end of my life,” said Ammir.

One of the fondest memories they had together was when they sang together, and played the guitar one night by the river (Sungai Batang Kayan).

“We had it on the video, and we drank coffee, we walk near the river that night, it was a great memory for both of us,” he added.

Ammir said that although he was sad that Vilkie is gone, he had to accept the reality of it, noting that the Vilkie’s father, Wilson told him to always be strong.

Sixteen-year-old Audrey Jes Petrus said that Helena, one of her best friends was a very lively person, adding that they are very close despite living in different villages.

“I live in Kampung Senibong, while Helena lived in Kampung Selapit.

“She is always laughing, a very happy-go-lucky girl,” she said.

She said that the last time she saw Helena was on the day before the incident, which is on Monday (August 19).

“It seems like it just happens, and of course who wants it to happen right.

“I remember I was shocked when I woke up hearing the news. And I did not expect that would happen as well,” Audrey said.

Andy Wilson Eron, aged 13, who is also Vilkie’s cousin, said he was very kind to everyone, adding that they always meet up with each other.

“Sometimes, we go to fishing at the river. And he likes to do fishing a lot,” said Andy.

The day of the incident, Andy revealed that he was at his dormitory.

“The warden of my dorm told me about it, and I was very shocked thinking whether it is true or not, it happened,” he added.

The fondest memories he had with Vilkie is none other than them hanging out during fishing.

“And we always meet with each other during the festive season such as Gawai and others. And if there is competition in schools, he will participate in it as well,” he stated.
