MUKAH, 2 Oct: More than three decades of service experience not only shapes career skills but also serves as an important foundation in educating the younger generation and improving the quality of service to society.

For the teacher candidate, Mohd Shazwan Seun, over three decades of experience in education gave him an understanding of the challenges of educating the young generation as well as forming students who excel academically, besides having praiseworthy discipline and scholarship.

"If our job is to teach, it's fun. Get in the classroom, get out of the classroom and make sure they're successful.

"But the main task is to educate and shape their future so that they become balanced and harmonious people emotionally, physically and spiritually", he said when met after receiving the Distinguished Service Medal here today.

The council was finalised by Sarawak Prime Minister Datuk Patinji Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Mohd Shazwan started his career as a technical teacher in 1991 before holding various posts, including Development and Supply Officer at the Open Division Education Office, senior secondary school assistant and principal.

He also served as a School Improvement Partner (SIPartner), which is the guidance partner to the principal before his mandatory retirement in 2024 at age 56.

He said that the teacher's job is not just to convey knowledge in classrooms, but also requires parental cooperation to ensure that student learning and discipline are well-run.

He said that parents also need to get information and understand an issue before making a decision, especially involving children and the school.

At the same time, he said, teachers should constantly improve their knowledge and master technological developments in order to remain relevant in educating generations with access to diverse information sources.

"Recognitions such as this Loyal Service Medal are a symbol of recognition for service and sacrifice, but to see an educated child develop into an informed and moral person is the most meaningful reward.

"Above all, I want to see a change in the behavior of educated children. That's a teacher's highest hope.

"Seeing a child who goes to school unable to read or lacking discipline, then comes out as disciplined and educated and able to change the future of his family is the most meaningful gift for a teacher", she said.

Meanwhile, Jamilah Salim has 38 years of experience in public service after starting her career with the Department of Public Works (JKR) in 1988 at Mukah as an Assistant Administrator (Perkeranian/Operations).

"I didn't expect to receive such an honor, but I am so grateful. Thank you to the employer and state government for giving this award.

"It is not in vain that I have served for 38 years", he said.

In an effort to improve her skills and knowledge, Jamilah continued her studies at Open University Malaysia in 2005 in the field of Bachelor's Degree Human Resources for three years.

The decision reflects his commitment to continuing to foster knowledge and self-empowerment despite his long service in the public sector.
