SIBU: The true spirit of nationalism and patriotism goes beyond slogans or words, and lies in the deep commitment to the country, says Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh

The Bawang Assan assemblyman said that Malaysians can show their love for the country through simple acts of kindness, such as being friendly and helpful to one another, being courteous on the road, and showing civic-mindedness.

“In other words, it means we should be good citizens, with the desire to live harmoniously with everyone, regardless of their race and religion, as fellow Malaysians.

“It also means understanding, tolerance, and cooperation with one another,” he said in his speech at Majlis Makan Malam Sambutan Perayaan Bersama, Kunci Perpaduan Gemilang at a renowned hotel here last night (Sept 14).

Wong stressed that demonstrating these values only requires a little give and take, coupled with sensitivity, sincerity, and care towards others.

“A little sensitivity towards the feelings of others, a lot of sincerity and care, and the conviction in our minds that we truly value national unity for the good of ourselves and future generations,” he said.

He said during the era of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the country introduced the concept of 1Malaysia, followed by the emphasis on Malaysia Baharu, Malaysia Prihatin, and Keluarga Malaysia, and now, under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the concept of Malaysia Madani has been introduced.

“From all these slogans or statements, we collectively emphasise the importance of national unity and patriotism towards our country,” he stressed.

The programme was organised by the neighbourhood watch committee (KRT) Sungai Empawah and Komuniti Madani Norkiah and officiated by Councillor Paul Teo, who represented the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, who is also the Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

Also present were Sibu District Information Officer Zaini Morshidi and organising chairman Kapitan Wong Hua.
