SIBU, Sept 14: Patriotism should not only be shown during the celebrations of National Month and Malaysian Day, but it should be translated through attitudes and actions in everyday life.

Sibu Division resident, Superi Awang Said said patriotism starts with basic things including obeying the law, maintaining community harmony, respecting religious and cultural diversity as well as preserving public facilities.

"The observance of Malaysia Day should be seen in a broader context. It is not merely a celebration but an opportunity to understand history, appreciate diversity and strengthen the spirit of solidarity as a sovereign nation", he said.

He said this through the text of a speech read by Deputy Resident of Sibu Division, Christopher Ranggau Unting at the Inauguration Meeting of Mini Sempena Day Malaysia 2026 Stage Sibu Division Exhibition in Pasaraya Bisonte, here today.

According to him, patriotism is not only reflected in flag-weaving, but also in a responsible attitude as citizens.

In addition, today's generation needs to understand that the peace, stability and prosperity enjoyed are the result of the struggles, sacrifices, tolerance and wisdom of previous generations.

"Without understanding history, we might easily take the peaceful benefits of today. So, history should be used as a guide for us to look forward and not just to reflect on the past", he said.

At the same time, he called on the Sibu community to revive the spirit of national love by waving the Jalur Gemilang and Mother Pertiwi flags in homes, business premises, offices as well as appropriate locations throughout National Month celebration and Malaysia Day.

"Societies are also called upon to uphold harmony by not making racial, religious, cultural or opinion differences an obstacle to cooperation, but instead finding common ground and strengthening values of mutual respect", he explained.

In the meantime, Superi described Malaysia Mini Day Exhibition 2026 Sibu as a good platform for society to understand the history of Malaysian formation, live the country's journey and strengthen the spirit of patriotism and unity.

According to him, visitors have the opportunity to get information through exhibition materials related to the history of formation of Malaysia as well as Sarawak's contribution in the formation of the country.

The seven-day exhibition was organized by the Malaysian Information Department of Sibu Region in collaboration with UKAS Sibu Division, Sarawak Premier Department.

It was held in conjunction with the National Malaysia Day Exhibition at Borneo Kuching Convention Centre (BCCK) from 10 to 16 September.

Among the exhibits are the history of Malaysia's founding, state quiz and distribution of pamphlets, the Gemilang Trail and the flag of Mother Pertiwiku.
