SIBU (July 5): The Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Bawang Assan’s Women’s Wing hosted a class on making fruit preserves and desserts at Elim Methodist Rehabilitation Centre in Ensurai here recently.

PDP senior vice-president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, who is also Bawang Assan assemblyman, officiated at the event that was attended by some 20 participants.

Also present at the event were PDP Bawang Assan Youth Leader and Political Secretary to Sarawak’s Premier Joshua Ting and PDP Bawang Assan division chairman Kapitan Wong Hua.

According to Wong Hua, the objective of the event was to empower women through knowledge sharing and entrepreneurship development.

The course, he added, had provided the participants some basic skills and knowledge on making fruit and vegetable preserves and desserts such as ‘terung asam’ sour eggplant jam, yellow pumpkin jam and coconut jelly.

“It is better to learn these skills rather than spend time idly on the phone every day, and hopefully the participants can utilise what they have learned from the course to produce local products and generate income for their family,” he said.

He also encouraged the young people who were not academically inclined to take up skills development programmes which had gained much demand in today’s trend of labour markets.
