MIRI (Sept 1): Persatuan Intelektual Pribumi Sarawak (Perantis) fully supports the proposal to revive the Borneo Games, which was last held in 2009.
Its women chief Robbia Jarup and deputy women chief Roseline Garai believed that the games would foster camaraderie and improve the development of athletes in the Borneo islands.
“Sarawak is one of the states with the best sports facilities and infrastructure in Malaysia, making it an ideal venue for the international event,” they said in a joint statement recently.
Furthermore, they said Sarawak’s natural beauty offers potential for developing extreme sports activities.
“This can further strengthen relationships and the spirit of friendship through sports and can also indirectly boost the tourism industry in Sarawak.”
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who proposed the revival of the Borneo Games recently, stated that if the event were to be held, it would involve Malaysia (specifically Sarawak and Sabah), Brunei Darussalam, and Indonesia (Kalimantan).
Robbia and Roseline believed that community unity can be further strengthened through the Borneo Games.
“The concept of unity can be achieved because the success or failure of a team in any sporting event will also be felt by the whole community, regardless of race or religion.
“Therefore, we in Perantis, fully support the proposal by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to revive the Borneo Games,” they added.
According to them, sports are one of life’s pleasures that can offer numerous positive benefits when approached strategically.
“Exercise is a way to keep our brains active and stimulated. As part of sports activities, exercise also aids in the development of the human brain.
“Sports activities and events contribute to a healthy society. The field of sports can enhance a person’s self-identity and expand friendships.”
