The court was told that former Petronas manager Khairul Akmal Jasni had applied through the Petros website for the position of head of upstream finance about five months before he allegedly attempted to leak the document to the company.
KUALA LUMPUR:

A Petros human resources officer confirmed in the sessions court today that two email usernames “azha.jalil” and “janin.girie” belonged to the company’s chief financial officer and chief executive officer respectively.

Nurul Qurratu Aini Laila Junaidi, 39, was testifying as the third prosecution witness in the trial of former Petronas manager Khairul Akmal Jasni, 41, accused of attempting to disclose a document titled “Q1 2024 Upstream Business Performance – Operational and Financial” to Petros on June 8, 2024.

She told the court she had identified the users through information in the company’s official email system.

“I know that the email addresses belonged to the CFO Azha Jalil Abdul Jalil and Dato Janin Girie, who is the CEO of the company,” she said.

Previously, the court heard from the first prosecution witness, former Petronas industrial relations manager Jumsuri Basri, that Khairul had sent the confidential document from his work email account to the two addresses.

During examination-in-chief by deputy public prosecutor Noor Syafina Radzuan, Nurul Qurratu confirmed that police had asked her during the investigation to verify the ownership of the two email accounts.

Noor Syafina: What did they ask you?

Nurul Qurratu: To confirm the details of the owners of the email usernames “azha.jalil” and “janin.girie”.

She testified that Petros’s security department subsequently provided Dang Wangi police with the email users’ details, including their MyKad numbers and job titles.

Khairul applied for job with Petros

In the same proceedings, Nurul Qurratu confirmed that Khairul had applied through the Petros website on Jan 24, 2024, for the position of head of upstream finance, about five months before he allegedly attempted to leak the document to the company.

She said that following an interview attended by a panel that included Azha Jalil and Sarawak resource management senior vice-president Abang Arabi Abang Narudin, she contacted Khairul by telephone and email on March 27, 2024, to offer him the position with a monthly salary of RM25,000.

However, Khairul declined the offer as it did not meet his salary expectations.

“Khairul had asked for RM37,000 (as salary) a month. Petros couldn’t fulfil the request and maintained the original offer of RM25,000. After he declined the offer, Petros did not make any counter-offer,” she said.

During cross-examination, defence counsel Louis Liaw asked Nurul Qurratu whether Petros had ever requested confidential documents from job applicants.

Liaw: Did Petros ask Khairul for the confidential document?

Nurul Qurratu: It’s beyond my knowledge.

Liaw: Throughout your time with Petros, has there ever been an incident where Petros asked a job candidate for a confidential document?

Nurul Qurratu: No.

Liaw: Has there ever been a case where a candidate received a better offer after supplying Petros with a confidential document?

Nurul Qurratu: It’s beyond my knowledge.

Khairul is charged with attempting to disclose the document, which he allegedly obtained in the course of his duties at Petronas, to Petros. The offence was allegedly committed at B-6-10, Marc Service Residence, Jalan Pinang, Dang Wangi, between 3.19pm and 3.21pm on June 8, 2024.

He was charged under Section 203A(1) read with Section 511 of the Penal Code, which carries a minimum fine of RM1 million, imprisonment of up to one year, or both, upon conviction.

The trial before Justice Mazuliana Abdul Rashid continues tomorrow.
