KUCHING, May 20: The Ministry of Education (MOE) must establish a plan to prepare primary school students in Sarawak to master the English language prior to learning Mathematics and Science subjects in the said language in secondary schools later.
In proposing this, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak chairman Roland Engan welcomed the Sarawak government’s plan to teach Mathematics and Science subjects in English in secondary schools beginning 2026.
“However, PKR Sarawak proposes that the MOE must establish a preparation plan for primary school students to master English immediately.
“This allows a satisfactory level of English proficiency among students, especially in the interior of Sarawak, to facilitate understanding and improve their performance when studying Mathematics and Science subjects at the secondary school level later,” he said in a statement today.
Roland also said an intensive English mastery plan can prepare students to sit for the assessment tests for English, Mathematics and Science subjects planned by the ministry.
On May 13, Sarawak Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn during a press conference at Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex, revealed that the teaching of Mathematics and Science subjects in the English language for secondary school students will be implemented in stages starting 2026.
This matter, he said, has been agreed to by MOE with a circular currently being drafted.
Sagah also mentioned that Year 6 students in Sarawak will have to undergo assessment for English, Mathematics and Science subjects starting 2025, and Form 3 students will have to undergo a similar assessment starting 2028.
This is to replace the UPSR and PT3 exams which were abolished by Putrajaya, in 2021 and 2022 respectively. — DayakDaily
