MIRI: Since its inauguration in February 2024, Playmaker Football Academy here has embarked on an exciting journey of grassroots football development.
Founded by Benedict Martin, a former Sarawak player and AFC accredited coach, the non-profit academy is dedicated to nurturing young football talents in the region.
Benedict, who has played for Selangor, Perak, Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak, now oversees the academy alongside a team of qualified coaches.
The growth of Playmaker Football Academy has been impressive.
Starting with just 10 children, the academy now boasts 45 registered players undergoing training.
According to him, this training has already yielded results, with many children representing their schools in inter-school competitions and some showing potential to represent the northern district.
“We would like to wholeheartedly thank our sponsor, MyGeo Sdn Bhd, and its founder Jasmin Ambrose,” Benedict expressed.
“We also extend our thanks to Kelab Rekreasi Petroleum for providing a safe venue for professional training. Our sponsors are keen to see the children develop in football and align with the goals of Playmaker Football Academy,” he added.
Weekend morning classes ensure players can balance their academic commitments with football development.
The academy not only teaches football basics but also stresses the importance of hard work, body care and discipline.
Parents have praised the academy for its in-depth classes and comprehensive training.
Playmaker Football Academy is open to a wide age range, accepting students from as young as seven to adults.
This inclusive approach caters to diverse talents, from budding young stars to those looking to refine their skills.
Throughout the year, the academy has organised a veteran tournament and plans to hold a U-16 league and an international 9-a-side youth tournament.
