KUCHING, Dec 19: The police have apprehended a 51-year-old local man and two of his accomplices suspected to be involved in a spate of recent motorcycle thefts.
Acting Kuching District Police Chief Supt Merbin Lisa disclosed that the police team from Sungai Maong Station apprehended the 51-year-old suspect at a public parking area in Mile 6 around 7pm on Dec 14.
“Following information obtained from the suspect, police subsequently arrested his two accomplices, aged 40 and 41, at 8.50pm in a house near the Beratok area along Jalan Kuching-Serian.
“A subsequent inspection led to the confiscation of four motorcycles suspected to be stolen,” he said in a statement today.
Further checks revealed that one motorcycle had been reported missing at Sungai Maong on Dec 14, while two other motorcycles were reported lost in Siburan area on Nov 27 and Dec 11.
One of the motorcycle chassis was found to be tampered with, and it has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department of Padawan District Police Headquarters (IPD Padawan) for additional investigation.
“All the suspects are currently under remand pursuant to Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code, from Dec 16 to 19. The remand is expected to be extended for ongoing investigation,” elaborated Merbin.
Subsequent investigations unveiled the past criminal records of each suspect, encompassing various offenses, including drug-related violations. Urine tests conducted on all suspects returned positive for amphetamine drugs.
Investigation papers have been initiated under Section 379A of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of imprisonment ranging from one to seven years, and possibly with a fine.
