BAU, June 27: Thieves cut through a chain-link fence and drilled a hole into a storage cabin before stealing cables and equipment from a CelcomDigi telecommunication substation along Jalan Jambusan here, causing an estimated loss of RM30,000.

Bau District Police chief Supt Mohd Haide A. Rahman said the incident was reported on June 26 at about 2.13pm by a telecommunications technician who discovered the damage while carrying out repair works following a network disruption.

“Initial investigations revealed that the incident is believed to have taken place on June 25 at around 3.15pm, when the complainant arrived at the site and found that several power system components had been tampered with, damaged and stolen,” he said in a statement today.

Among the items missing were a rectifier unit set, AC power cables connected to the rectifier, several DC power distribution (DCPD) cable units, and two battery banks.

“Investigations found that the suspect gained entry by cutting the chain-link fence before drilling a hole into the cabin to access and remove the equipment,” he said.

Mohd Haide added that the remote location of the site, its distance from residential areas, and the lack of a functioning security system are believed to have facilitated the crime.

The case is being investigated under Section 431A of the Penal Code and Section 235 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

No arrests have been made so far, and police are actively working to trace the suspect.

He urged members of the public with any information on the incident to come forward and assist investigations by contacting the Bau District Police Headquarters or the investigating officer.

Mohd Haide also called on telecommunication infrastructure operators to enhance security measures, including the installation of functional monitoring systems, to prevent similar incidents from recurring. — DayakDaily
