KUCHING, July 7: Two local men have been arrested by police in Kampung Bintawa Ulu after authorities seized more than one kilogramme of suspected methamphetamine, commonly known as syabu, in a drug enforcement operation on July 6, 2026.
Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the arrests were carried out by a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) of the Kuching District Police Headquarters.
“The suspects, aged 38 and 51, were detained during the operation, following which police conducted an inspection and discovered suspected syabu weighing 1,027.95 grammes. The seized drugs were estimated to have a street value of RM51,397,” he said in a statement today.
Police also seized RM3,303 in cash, which is believed to have been proceeds from drug trafficking activities.
Alexson disclosed that an initial urine screening test on the 38-year-old suspect was found to be positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, while the 51-year-old suspect tested negative.
“Checks conducted by police found that both suspects had no previous criminal records,” he added.
The two men have been remanded for seven days from July 8 to 14 under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code to assist with investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries severe penalties upon conviction, including the possibility of the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping of not less than 12 strokes.
Alexson said the success of the operation was the result of continuous intelligence gathering and cooperation from members of the public.
“The Royal Malaysia Police will not compromise with any party involved in drug trafficking. Possessing, distributing, or protecting drug-related activities are serious offences under the law,” he said.
He added that the NCID remains committed to combating drug crimes to safeguard present and future generations, describing drugs as “the country’s number one enemy.”
