KUCHING: Police are continuing to track down individuals involved in recent arson attacks on convenience stores in Kuching and Sri Aman as investigations into the motive remain ongoing.Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said investigators had yet to ascertain the reason behind the incidents.
“We will continue our efforts to track down the suspects involved in the arson incidents and find out their motive for committing this act.
“As of now, we have yet to ascertain the reason behind the incident,” he told reporters after the Sarawak SOEs Transformation Programme: A Pledge for Good Governance, High Performance and Value Creation at Hilton Hotel here today (Sept 22).
Mohamad Zainal, who is also Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) Management director, said police will also inspect convenience stores believed to be involved in illegal online gambling.
“There might be a group or a syndicate involved in online gambling activities operating behind these business premises.
“However, as this is an ongoing investigation, we cannot determine if that is true. We will make more arrests to verify this claim,” he added.
In light of the recent cases, police have arrested two individuals in connection with property damage, arson, and public endangerment.
The case is being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code.
Police also urged operators of affected premises to lodge reports immediately to assist with the investigation.
