SIBU (Aug 1): A total of RM200,000 has been allocated to upgrade facilities at Jalan Kiong Kiong, Jalan Chew Kung, Rumah Peter Tinggom and Rumah Everly Bajut, said Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Community Development Committee led by councilor Kevin Lau.
He said the upgrading projects, implemented by the Sibu Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), will begin immediately.
“The fund was from the Special Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) fund. It was approved by the Premier of Sarawak.
“The upgrading works include installation of gabion retaining walls at Jalan Kiong Kiong and Jalan Chew Kung, upgrading of wooden walkway at Rumah Peter Tinggom and upgrading of wooden jetty at Rumah Everly Bajut,” he said.
He was speaking after the handing over of the projects to contractors yesterday.
He said the installation of gabion retaining walls at Jalan Kiong Kiong and Jalan Chew Kung was to prevent soil erosion which would spill on the roads, as requested by residents there.
“We do our regular visit and many residents requested us for all these upgrades. After gathering more information and requests, with the assistance from Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, the proposal for the upgrades was presented to the Premier of Sarawak.
“In April this year, we received the fund for the necessary upgrading works around Bawang Assan area,” said Lau.
He hoped that these upgrades will improve the living environment of the local residents there, while assuring his commitment to continue serving the people of Bawang Assan as best he could.
