KUCHING, Nov 29: The University of Cambridge (Cambridge) has proposed that the Sarawak government identify and monitor high-performing students as early as Form Three to strengthen students’ academic performance and improve their chances of gaining admission to the prestigious university.

According to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the proposal was made during a meeting with Cambridge representatives here last week.

“It is competitive (to get into Cambridge) and the standards are high, so they advised us to identify students in high-performing schools, including international schools, be monitored from Form Three so that by the time they finish Form 6 or their A-levels, they can come to Cambridge,” he said during the Sarawak Development Institute’s (SDI) 30th Anniversary Dinner here on Friday (Nov 28) whereby a recording of his speech was made available to the media.

He hoped that through this initiative, Sarawak could produce the talent needed for a ready workforce that has knowledge of all significant industries in the world today.

Furthermore, it is also complemented by the State government’s Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) to be implemented next year, whereby students in State-owned universities will have the privilege to access free education, as well as its collaboration with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

“No matter your background, you (students) will have the privilege to further your studies because the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government is behind you,” he said. — DayakDaily
