KUCHING (July 30): The Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) presented Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg with the Technology Leadership Award today.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang presented the award at the MBOT Experts Network in Technology, Innovation and Cooperative Event (ENTICE) event in Putrajaya.

When announcing the award, MBOT president Prof Datuk Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir called Abang Johari a true pioneer of technological advancement.

She said under Abang Johari’s leadership, Sarawak has made significant strides in the green hydrogen sector by forming partnerships for projects which include the development of large-scale hydrogen plants.

“This move is part of a broader effort to transition to sustainable energy sources and reduce carbon emissions. Through initiatives such as the development of smart cities, the expansion of high-speed internet access, and the promotion of digital literacy, he (Abang Johari) has ensured that Sarawak is a hub for technological innovation, attracting investment, and creating countless job opportunities.

“Your dedication, foresight, and exceptional leadership have not only transformed technology but have also inspired countless others to dream big and reach greater heights,” she said.

According to Siti Hamisah, every time she visits Sarawak, she makes it a point to engage with technologists and they are truly inspired by Abang Johari’s vision.

“Your leadership has encouraged the future generation of talents in technology to be progressive, ambitious, and bold,” she added.

In his remarks, Abang Johari said the award recognises the efforts now being made in Sarawak.

He said he aimed to arm Sarawakians, in particular, and Malaysians, in general, with the right technological background and discipline to adapt and keep abreast with the latest technologies.

This includes using Artificial Intelligence and alternative fuel to face today’s main global challenges of climate change and food security, he said.

“Not to me as an individual, but rather a collective effort for Sarawakians to adapt and to know and get acquainted with the latest technology available,” he said.

Abang Johari also delivered the keynote address at the event prior to the award presentation.

Among those present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs and Ukas) Datuk Abdullah Saidol, and State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
