KUCHING, June 7: While the 2.9-magnitude earthquake detected in Mambong on Tuesday (June 2) does not pose any serious concern, it is still being investigated and monitored by the relevant authorities.

According to Mambong assemblyman Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, discussions have been held with the Sarawak Department of Minerals and Geoscience, in which the public has been advised to not be overly worried as a reading of 2.9 on the Richter scale can occur at any time and is not considered alarming.

“However, they are still conducting investigations, and we are awaiting the full report on the incident,” he told reporters after the closing ceremony of the Sarawak Career and Training Fair (SCat Fair) 2026 here today, as reported by TVS.

“We hope this is an isolated incident and will not recur. At the same time, all relevant agencies have conducted inspections and are preparing reports to be submitted to the Resident’s Office for further action,” he added.

He also said that repair work on any damages caused by the minor earthquake will be carried out promptly as while most roads in the affected area remain in good condition and are safe for use, several minor cracks have been detected.

It was reported that while the earthquake occurred in Mambong, tremors were felt in several areas around Samarahan and Serian. — DayakDaily
