KUCHING, Nov 12: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) may hold an open contest for its main posts at the next Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC), says its Youth chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan.
However, in stating this, he stressed that it still depends on the approval of the party’s Supreme Council.
He told reporters that he recently had gatherings in Central Sibu and Miri during which the grassroot leaders had expressed their concerns on the party’s direction and the next in line to continue its legacy apart from seeking an open contest in the next TDC.
He explained that in the previous TDC, the Supreme Council has decided to retain the party’s status quo except the vacant seat of the president following the passing of the late Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing.
“Thus, the deputy president (Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum) automatically took office of the (president) post. That was agreed during our last TDC.
“After that, we did say maybe the next round we will have an open contest but again, it depends on the Supreme Council’s approval. As I said, there is still another one-and
-a-half years to go,” he told reporters after officiating at DayakDaily’s ‘Magnificient Sarawak: An Unforgettable Trip’ writing competition prize-giving ceremony held at Imperial Hotel here today.
Snowdan also revealed that the next PRS Supreme Council meeting will take place at its headquarters here on Nov 17, at 3pm.
Following this, he said he would bring up the proposal to introduce an e-membership system developed together with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) to facilitate the registration of new party members.
To date, PRS has about 55,000 members. — DayakDaily
