Public urged to avoid open burning amidst hot weather

SIBU: The public here is advised to refrain from open burning due to the current hot and dry weather conditions in Sarawak.

Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Sibu Zone 4 chief Andy Alie said that open burning could exacerbate the situation and pose serious risks to individuals with respiratory conditions.

“I remind the public not to engage in any open burning activities, especially in areas prone to ignition, such as peatlands, rubbish disposal sites, gardens, and farms,” he said in a statement today (July 27).

Andy urged the public to report any instances of open burning or forest fires to the authorities.

“The public should stay informed about the current situation through mass media and social media. In case of a fire, please evacuate the risk area,” he emphasised.

He also cautioned smokers against discarding cigarette butts on roadsides or in bushes.

“If it is necessary to conduct open burning for plantation development, the company involved must first obtain a special permit from the Department of Environment and the Natural Resources and Environment Board,” he said.

Additionally, he advised the public to take precautions during this period, such as conserving water, staying hydrated, and reducing outdoor activities.
