MIRI (Nov 2): The installation of radar speed detection signs around the city is meant to serve as a reminder for motorists to adhere to the permitted speed limit, says Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.

During his inspection on the newly-installed sign on Thursday, he said the installation was not intended to catch overspeeding drivers; instead, it meant to remind and warn them.

“Authorities can also detect how many vehicles are overspeeding, and when it happens most frequently.

“With this data, we can determine when the driver is accelerating and we will get the enforcement officers to carry out inspections at the identified locations at those times,” said Lee, the assemblyman for Senadin.

Adding on, he said more radar speed detection signs would be installed across the city, especially at accident-prone routes.

“The sign across the road from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) is one of the four radar speed detection signs that the Public Works Department (JKR) had installed recently.

“Other locations include near the Borneo Medical Centre’s junction, along the road leading to the Miri Seahorse Monument roundabout, and in front of JKR Miri Office,” he said.

The state minister hoped that by warning drivers to drive within the permitted speed limit, the number of accidents as well as damages to properties such as traffic lights and streetlights could be reduced.
