SIBU (Oct 25): The Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) plans to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at recreational parks under its supervision, including in Sibu Jaya, as part of its effort to curb vandalism.

SRDC chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said the initiative aimed to improve safety in park areas, along with reducing incidents of theft and damage that occur frequently.

“The installation of CCTVs is a long-term step to monitor any suspicious activities in the parks.

“We believe that the use of CCTVs will help reduce vandalism rates and ensure the safety of public facilities.

“However, the implementation of this installation is still subject to funding that will be allocated in the future,” he said when contacted today.

Sempurai revealed that the damages caused by vandalism at these parks include theft of decorative lights at landmarks, the removal of electrical cables, and graffiti spray-painting on playground equipment signs.

Additionally, SRDC plans to introduce the ‘Park Friends’ programme, involving local residents or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in addressing the matter.

“Park Friends will act as the community’s eyes and ears to help prevent any activities that damage public facilities in these recreational parks,” Sempurai.

“SRDC also plans to launch a public awareness programme through leaflets distribution, recreational activities, and social media campaigns to raise awareness among residents about the importance of looking after the public facilities,” he said.
