Register your children’s births, MP reminds parents

MIRI: Parents have been urged to register their children’s births immediately after they are born and to assist them in obtaining valid identification cards by the age of 12.

In making the call Miri MP Chiew Choon Man expressed grave concern over the plight of undocumented children in his constituency, revealing that many cases have come to light since he took office.

In a Facebook post, he said these issues often stem from parents failing to officially register their children’s births or their marriages, resulting in a generation of children facing significant hardships.

Without proper citizenship documentation, he lamented that these children would be unable to enrol in government schools, open bank accounts, obtain passports, or even secure employment.

Alarmingly, some are mistakenly classified as illegal immigrants and face legal repercussions.

“A few months ago, I received five similar reports from parents who wanted their children to attend school.

“They are eager to provide their children with a good education to avoid ending up without qualifications and struggling to find employment.

“These young children all have big dreams, with some aspiring to become doctors, teachers, and more.

“However, their dreams remain just that, dreams, due to becoming victims of circumstance beyond their control,” he said.

In light of this, Chiew has sought legal assistance to help these children obtain the necessary documents for school enrolment.

He expressed commitment to supporting them in the citizenship application process, emphasising that these children are denied their rights as citizens despite being born in the country.

Chiew expressed his gratitude on receiving news that these children have been granted approval to attend school.

“They asked me, ‘Uncle, when can I start school and make new friends?’ I told them anytime is fine, but they need to buy the uniform first before starting school,” he said.

Chiew said he then took the children shopping for their first-ever school uniforms, witnessing their excitement and anticipation.

He then expressed hope that these children will achieve their dreams and become respected individuals in society.

As such, the MP stressed the importance of recognising these children’s rights as Malaysian citizens to ensure they can lead fulfilling lives in their homeland.

“Do not jeopardise your children’s future due to negligence or dismiss it as a minor issue,” he cautioned.

Chiew who is aware that many similar situations exist, said he will continue to collaborate with various government agencies to complete the necessary documentation so that all children can receive an education.

He extended his gratitude to the officers from the Miri District Education Office and the Miri Branch of the Legal Aid Department for their assistance.
