MIRI (Sept 24): The project to repair and upgrade the gutters and ceiling of Miri Central Police Station (CPS) has reached 60 per cent completion, according to Datuk Sebastian Ting.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts said the project, costing RM150,000, began this month and is scheduled for completion in February next year.

“After today’s inspection, the contractor said that the work is 60 per cent complete, which is ahead of schedule. This project was approved under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) for 2023,” he said.

Ting, who is Piasau assemblyman, noted that 10 offices in the police station were often flooded, especially during continuous heavy rain, which had caused damage to the ceilings, flooring, carpet and walls.

“The contractor discovered that only five gutters had been installed, of which only three were functioning.

“To prevent rainwater from clogging and causing flash floods in the offices, the contractor said they increased the number of gutters to 12 and increased the size of the gutters from three inches to four inches,” he explained.

He added that the flooding issue had since been resolved following the installation of the new gutters.

Meanwhile, the contractor’s managing director Azrin Mohamad Effendy said they will begin installing new ceilings to replace the damaged ones and repaint the ceilings and walls.

On another note, Ting mentioned that it is high time the current police station is replaced with a new building.

He explained that the present building, which was constructed in 1953, is in a very dilapidated condition.

“The current CPS should be replaced because it is no longer conducive or safe for the police personnel to work in,” he said.

Ting was accompanied on the visit by councillor Tan Lek Jin.
