SIBU (July 20): The jetty of Rumah Abell Mang in Bawang Assan, which has long had the attention of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Community Development Team, has begun its repair works recently.
The team’s chairman Councillor Kevin Lau, alongside members of his team, were accompanied to the jetty site with engineers from Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) here yesterday.
He said the team had received a repair request from the longhouse chieftain of Abell Mang, as the jetty was in a dilapidated state.
“The residents informed us that numerous students return from school using the jetty and some villagers rely on the river for their livelihood, so the upkeep of the jetty is crucial,” said Lau, who is also SRDC Environment and Public Health Standing Committee chairman.
Lau added that the council is funding the approved project under the Local Authorities Project.
“I look forward to the completion of this jetty repair, bringing improvement to the residents of Rumah Abell Mang,” he said.
Moreover, Lau seeks the help and cooperation of its residents to maintain the jetty upon project completion.
