KUCHING, Oct 9: The federal government has allocated RM240 million to prepare for Malaysia’s hosting of the 2027 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in tabling Budget 2027 in Parliament today, said the prestigious sporting events would provide an opportunity to elevate Malaysia’s standing on the international stage while fostering unity among Malaysians.

“In addition, the government is also committed to strengthening the country’s sports development, with RM460 million allocated for national sports programmes,” he said.

The allocation would cover efforts to strengthen high-performance sports and the Road to Gold programme, support programmes for para-athletes and deaf athletes, as well as the maintenance of sports facilities nationwide.

In addition, Anwar announced that RM30 million has been allocated for the Sports Matching Grant to encourage sports organisations, clubs and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to organise high-performance sporting events.

“The allocation for school sports activities will be increased by 50 per cent to RM27 million, which is expected to benefit more than 4.6 million students in 10,000 schools nationwide,” he added.

Anwar also congratulated Malaysia’s contingent for its performance at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, where the athletes secured nine gold, seven silver and 16 bronze medals.

He conveyed his appreciation to the athletes, coaches and officials for their contributions in bringing pride to the country. — DayakDaily
