MIRI: The Sarawak government is set to embark on a major infrastructure project next year, with the construction of a road connecting Marudi to Long Terawan in Mulu.
The project, estimated to cost RM2 billion, was announced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Speaking at the launch of SJK(C) Chiaw Nan in Taman Tunku today, Abang Johari highlighted the significant impact this project would have on the region’s connectivity and development.
“In addition to the Marudi-Long Terawan road, we are also completing a bridge that will shorten the travel time from Miri to Marudi to just 30 minutes. The bridge will be ready by the end of the year, making travel between these two areas much more convenient,” Abang Johari said.
“Once the bridge is done, Miri to Marudi will be just like my garden, and we will push further from Marudi straight to Long Terawan.
“We are committed to building this road to Long Terawan in Mulu. Although we need to secure the necessary funds, Sarawak’s financial position is strong.
Last year, our revenue was RM13 billion, and we anticipate this year’s revenue to be just as robust, if not more,” he added.
Abang Johari also addressed the environmental considerations of the project, noting the proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage site in Mulu.
“We will construct the road outside the UNESCO site to preserve its integrity. The road will connect Mount Buda directly to Limbang, enabling land travel from Miri to Limbang,” he disclosed.
Abang Johari highlighted the importance of sustainable development, mentioning the state’s focus on carbon trading and the new economy.
“We are taking care of our forests because carbon trading is part of the new economy. We want our children to understand and benefit from this new economic model,” he said.
In his speech, Abang Johari called for unity among the people of Sarawak to ensure the success of these initiatives.
“The people of Sarawak must unite. If we are not united, someone else will take advantage of these opportunities. Together, we can build a brighter future for our state,” he pointed out.
The construction of the Marudi-Long Terawan road is a significant step in improving infrastructure in Sarawak, promising to enhance connectivity, support economic growth, and ensure sustainable development for future generations.
