MIRI, 15 Oct: The Sarawak Government continues to commit to expanding access to education through various initiatives to help students continue their studies and reduce the financial burden of families.

Through the Sarawak Budget 2027, RM30.5 million has been allocated for laptop assistance to first-year students of Diploma and Bachelor's level to facilitate learning affairs as well as academic tasks.

For i-CATS University College students, the initiative was welcomed as it could help those facing financial constraints to own their own laptops, in addition to reducing the burden on parents in providing learning needs.

I-CATS Business Administration Diploma student Hazmi Daniel, 19, said the aid was very helpful for students who could not afford a laptop due to the relatively expensive equipment.

"This program is very helpful to students, especially those who cannot afford their own laptops. With this help, we've made it easier to complete the coursework", he said when he met TVS here today.

Meanwhile, i-CATS Diploma of Land Management student Veleona Rayner, 20, said the aid also helped to alleviate the burden of parents having to provide expenses for their children's educational needs.

"This is a great help for students who are struggling to buy laptops. It can make it easier for them to complete tasks and at the same time help parents not to think too much about spending on those needs", he said.

For i-CATS's Electrical and Electronics Engineering Diploma student, Rabiatul Adawiyah Husnul, 20, the help of laptops can make it easier for students to complete academic assignments as well as reduce expenses.

"In my opinion, this laptop aid is very helpful for students because it makes them easier to do their homework and reduces the cost of buying a laptop", he said.

In addition to laptop assistance, the Government of Sarawak has also allocated RM200 million for the implementation of Free Higher Education Scheme (FTES) in 2027, which targets up to 10,600 students through 64 Bachelor's Degree programmes at four state-owned universities.

The Government of Sarawak also provided RM50 million for special pocket money assistance to Sarawak students pursuing Diploma and Bachelor's level studies at recognized higher education institutions across Malaysia, in addition to RM2 million for the book voucher program.

The various initiatives reflect the state government's commitment to ensuring more students have access to appropriate educational facilities, thus supporting the development of Sarawak's human capital. - TVS
