KUCHING, July 7: The construction of Sarawak’s new massive landmark, the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching II (BCCK 2), is progressing ahead of schedule.

The RM550 million project, which began construction in April 2025, has achieved over 13 per cent completion as of July 4, 2026.

Speaking to the media after touring the site this afternoon, Deputy Infrastructure and Port Development Minister (Infrastructure Development) Datuk Aidel Lariwoo said the contractor, CMS Land Sdn Bhd, is giving its full commitment to this project.

“To date, they are already 1.5 months ahead of schedule. This is very much what we expected: that they will be able to finish it by early 2028, or before the original date scheduled for March 31, 2028.

“So far, there are no changes, and everything is moving according to plan. I am happy with the rate of this progress. This project has not been significantly affected by the rise in diesel prices.

“In fact, the supply of machinery and construction materials is sufficient to ensure that construction work proceeds smoothly,” he said.

Set to be one of the world’s largest single-floor timber structures at 15,500 m² under-roof with a clear span of 42 metres, BCCK 2 will not only further strengthen Sarawak’s standing as a premier destination for conventions and international events, but is also said to potentially propel the State’s engineered timber industry and significant economic growth for the region.

“We are now close to the centre part of the BCCK 2 main hall. This hall has an area of approximately 5,900 square meters, equivalent to about 1.47 acres. It is larger than a football field.

“In addition, the construction of the multi-storey car park is also showing positive progress, with structural works now completed up to the second level,” Aidel added.

Located next to the new Sejingkat Bridge, which is also due to be completed soon, Aidel said that BCCK 2 will be one of Sarawak’s iconic buildings.

Meanwhile, BCCK 2 is expected to accommodate up to 9,500 delegates, including a multi-storey carpark with over 1,000 bays, which will significantly expand Sarawak’s capacity to host large-scale conferences, exhibitions and international gatherings. — DayakDaily
