KUCHING, July 11: Two major drainage upgrading projects worth over RM800,000 are currently being implemented in the Batu Kawa constituency, which will help alleviate flash floods caused by heavy rainfall.

According to a press release, the projects, located at RPR Batu Kawa Lorong 6 and Jalan Field Force, have commenced and are expected to be completed in August and October of this year, respectively.

“These are people-centric projects that are vital to the development and well-being of the community. Contractors must honour their contractual obligations and complete the projects on schedule.

“Failure to do so will result in appropriate action, including being blacklisted, as similar cases have occurred in the past,” said Deputy Premier and Batu Kawa assemblyman, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, during a recent inspection of the project sites where he was briefed by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) engineers on the progress of the projects.

The ongoing drainage upgrading project at RPR Batu Kawa is among the largest infrastructure initiatives undertaken in the area in recent decades.

Under the project, all front and rear drains within the housing estate will be upgraded in phases, while roads along the respective lanes will be resurfaced upon completion of the drainage works to facilitate smoother traffic flow.

Dr Sim noted that improving residential drainage systems is a complex and challenging undertaking, and with Batu Kawa undergoing rapid development, these long-overdue infrastructure improvements are necessary to keep pace with the area’s growth and to provide residents with a safer, better, and more comfortable living environment.

“Climate change and the continuous growth of residential developments have rendered some existing drainage systems inadequate to cope with increasing rainfall, making drainage upgrades essential to ensure efficient water flow and minimise inconvenience to residents during the rainy season,” said Dr Sim.

At the same time, he also welcomed constructive suggestions from the public and called on all stakeholders to work together in creating a better, safer, and more comfortable living environment for the residents of Batu Kawa. — DayakDaily
