KUCHING: Several key streets around Kuching’s Waterfront and Old City will be closed to traffic during the 39th National Chinese Cultural Festival, which will take place from Sept 13 to 15.
According to the Federation of Chinese Associations, several streets in Kuching Waterfront will be closed on Sept 14 and 15 from 4pm to 10pm to ensure the smooth running of the event.
“The roads that will be completely closed on the Sept 14 to 15 from 4pm to 10pm include Gambier Street, Court House Street, the section in front of the Old Court House, Haji Openg Road, Main Bazaar (affected), and the Merdeka Plaza exit at the Waterfront.
“Additionally, during the day, only one lane of the road in front of the Old Court will be open.
“Hence, we urge road users to avoid these areas during the festival and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused said the organisers of the event,” said the organiser in a press statement on Wednesday (Sept 11).
This event, promoted by the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia, hosted by the Federation of Chinese Associations Sarawak, and organised by the Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching Samarahan and Serian Division Sarawak, will kick off on the Sept 12 with activities spreading from Serian and Samarahan to Kuching.
“A series of cultural activities will follow in Kuching city, such as the torch relay scheduled on Sept 12 and 13.
“A large stage will be set up in front of the Old Court Clock Tower at the Waterfront Park for the creative lantern parade competition, cultural performance, and and the closing ceremony on Sept 15, starting at 5pm.”
Additionally, on Sept 14 and 15, colourful cultural celebrations will also take place around Carpenter Street, featuring lantern-making contests at the Feng Shan Temple Theatre and mooncake-making demonstrations at the Waterfront.
