KUCHING (Aug 11): Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen urged the state government to take immediate action against the latest series of online fraud tactics through an e-wallet platform.
The Stampin MP said in the past month, his party received seven complaints regarding fraud cases involving credit card holders from certain banks, which involved the transfer of money from their cards to an e-wallet platform.
“The problem now is, when you call 997 for the National Scam Response Centre, you will receive an answer stating that the e-wallet platform is not under their jurisdiction,” he said during a press conference at the Sarawak DAP headquarters here today.
Accordingly, Chong urged the state government and Bank Negara to look into this matter and take immediate action to deal with the issue of fraud through the e-wallet platform.
He also advised credit card holders not to press any numbers or links provided by unknown individuals through the short message system.
“If you receive any notification that your card is being used, do not click on any number or link given because it is a fraudulent number,” he said.
Regarding the seven complaints received, Chong said they involved the loss of more than RM20,000.
Furthermore, he said the victims have made police reports but no action was made as the reports were a reference for the bank, and not for police action.
