KUCHING (July 29): The Sarawak government held a Joint Committee on Industry Coordination (JBI) meeting with the federal Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) to coordinate current policies.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said this vital meeting sought to ensure policies introduced in Sarawak are effective in attracting both domestic and foreign investors for the well-being of both Malaysia and Sarawak’s economies.

“This is to ensure that the policies introduced are effective to attract investment and for planning the growth of the industry.

“This can also ensure policies and initiatives are aligned and supportive between the federal and Sarawak governments,” he said in his speech for the meeting here today.

Co-chairing the meeting was federal Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.

Awang Tengah, who is also Sarawak Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment, said the matters discussed include future challenges such as the effects of climate change, rapid technological developments, and global competition.

He said the state government is always committed to advancing the international trade sector, industry, and investment to make Sarawak a major player.

“The Sarawak government has always taken proactive steps to increase the region’s presence in the international market through participation in international exhibitions as well as trade and investment missions abroad.

“In fact, Sarawak has established the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Singapore (Statos) and we will establish the same office in Brunei Darussalam,” he explained, adding the establishment of such offices abroad seeks to attract investors and tourists.

Among Sarawak government representatives present at the meeting were Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Sarawak Attorney General Datu Saferi Ali, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, and Deputy Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment Datuk Malcolm Mussen Lamoh.
