KUCHING (Aug 3): A new administrative office for the Sarawak Premier is set to be built in Petra Jaya, confirmed Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the facility would house his office and is not a residence, although it will include basic amenities.
“Yes, it’s true. It is an office, not a residence, but there will be basic facilities,” he told a press conference at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre after the handing over of the state flag to the Sarawak contigent for the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma).
He was responding to queries from the press regarding the purpose of the new building, after some speculation it would be the official residence of the Premier of Sarawak.
Abang Johari added the exact status of the construction was still being assessed and emphasised the importance of security measures for the new building.
Presently, the state’s administration operates from Wisma Bapa Malaysia, which has become more accessible to the public over time.
Thus, the new building aims to provide a more secure and dedicated space for the Cabinet and other government functions.
Regarding the construction costs, Abang Johari mentioned the budget details would be shared later.
“I will inform you about the cost later. For now, our focus is on Sukma,” he said.
Meanwhile, a check by The Borneo Post today saw the building, located in front of the Datuk Amar Abang Hari Suleiman roundabout, is still under construction and is at least three storeys high.
The facility is situated near other government buildings such as Wisma Pelita, Wisma Sumber Alam, Wisma Sesco and the Sarawak State Library.
