S’wak signs MoU with Aussie varsity for sustainable forestry

CANBERRA: Sarawak has taken a major stride in sustainable forestry through a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Australian National University (ANU).

The agreement, signed between Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) and the university during a ceremony in Canberra, marks a significant step toward advancing sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation and capacity development.

The MoU was signed by Sarawak Forests director Datuk Hamden Mohamad

and ANU Dean of the College of Science Prof Kiaran Kirk here in Australia Sunday (Aug 12).

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan, was also present to witness the signing of the MoU.

“This partnership aims to advance sustainable forest ecosystem functions, biodiversity conservation, climate and energy initiatives, and sustainable forest management,” he said.

Awang Tengah said the agreement also emphasises plantation forestry, forest fire management, and opportunities for the development of officers and researchers through capacity building and other collaborative efforts.

“Our efforts are directed at preserving Sarawak’s rich natural heritage for future generations, balancing ecological integrity with the needs of local communities,” he said.

Prior to the signing, the Sarawak delegation participated in a briefing and dialogue session with officials from the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) government, which included representatives from the Environment Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry.

Present were State Attorney-General Datuk Saferi Ali, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development Datuk Abdullah Julaihi, Controller of Natural Resources and Environment Board Jack Liam, Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation general manager Zainal Abidin, Sarawak Forestry Corporation general manager Abang Arabi Abang Aimran, and Harwood Timber Sdn Bhd general manager Abu Hassan Yusuf.
