KUCHING (July 30): Minister of Transport Sarawak (MoTS) Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin and his delegation recently participated in a key meeting with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) to discuss the regulatory approval requirements for establishing a Sarawak-owned airline, following the acquisition of MASwings.

According to a statement by MoTS, Lee and his delegation met with CAAM chief executive officer Dato Capt Norazman Mahmud and other directors at CAAM Putrajaya on July 26.

The meeting included a briefing on key topics such as the Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC), aircraft matters, operational readiness, and compliance with both international and Malaysian aviation standards and regulations.

“Furthermore, the discussion also touched on potential challenges and mitigation strategies to ensure a smooth and successful transition post-acquisition,” said MoTS.

In addition, the meeting also covered the regulations and procedures necessary for operating cargo drones in Sarawak’s rural areas.

Lee expressed keen interest in leveraging drone technology to enhance Sarawak’s transportation infrastructure, emphasising the government’s commitment to innovation and modernisation in the aviation sector.

“The CAAM’s experts offered guidance on regulatory matters and the safe integration of cargo drones into Sarawak’s airspace, paving the way for future advancements in this emerging field,” added MoTS.

Lee also discussed collaboration with Norazman for the upcoming Sarawak Aviation Talk Programme 2024, scheduled this August in Kuching.

“Dato Captain Norazman Mahmud affirmed CAAM’s unwavering support for the Sarawak government in ensuring aviation safety and facilitating the establishment of its own airline,” the statement added.

Lee’s delegation included Deputy Sarawak Attorney-General Datu John Wayne Chamberlin Sirau, MoTS permanent secretary Datu Wong Hee Sieng, State Financial Secretary Office Corporate Services and Investment director Ahmad Faizal Yaman Ahmad Shafiee, MoTS Aviation Technical advisor Sio Yew Hua and other senior officers.
